Pay per Punjabi proverb and idiom with English meaning - New Contest!

No. This is not a typo error and the title is not "Pay per Click". We are actually starting a contest where you will post Punjabi proverbs with English translations & explanations. We will pay Rs. 1 per 2 proverbs posted.

All entries must be posted as a response below and not anywhere else. The responses will contain only Punjabi proverbs with their English meanings and not anything else. Any response appreciating the contest or anyone's post and the like will not be entertained.

Rules

  • Only one response is allowed per member. If you have already posted some proverbs and want to post some more, edit your old response and insert there. Post them serially and if possible, enter a serial number.

  • All proverbs will be checked by the editorial body. An approved proverb will carry a star mark (*) at the beginning of it.

  • You cannot post any proverb already posted by someone else and has been approved (with star mark). All such duplicate proverbs will be deleted.

  • The contest will be closed when we will have ample proverbs and the closing dates will be announced later. The closure will be notified one week prior to it.

  • After the closure of the contest, members will be given cash credits depending on their number of approved proverbs.

  • No cash will be given for less than 2 proverbs. Rs. 1 will be given for 2 and 3 proverbs, Rs. 2 for 4 and 5, Rs. 3 for 6 and 7 and so on.

    Meaning of Punjabi Proverb Khoota hi khoh vich Paa Dita aay: 'You have drowned the Donkey into well'

    Explanation: There are some persons who lead their neighbours a dance by giving a sense of false suggestions which in turn instead of solving could lead to more problem and in turn would end up from bad to worse. So it's always good to be judgmental before taking up others suggestion.

    2. * Punjabi Proverb 'Naach naa jaanay aangan tairhrhaa'
    Meaning of Punjabi Proverb Naach naa jaanay aangan tairhrhaa: 'One who doesn't know how to dance says the floor is uneven'!

    Explanation: An inefficient person would blame other's for his failures and give lame excuses for his inability. On the other hand an efficient person will do his job well with whatever tool he gets and do the job perfectly. So mere success not lies on the tools, but it lies with the valuable skill and attitude of the person who does the job.

    3. * Punjabi Proverb 'Thotha chana baaje ghana'
    Meaning of Panjabi Proverb Thotha chana baaje ghana: 'Empty vessels makes much noise'.

    Explanation: This proverb says that the empty vessels will make much noise whereas vessels which is full of water will make less noise. Similarly people who have less knowledge will boast themselves very much to hide their inefficiency and they do boast in order to attract others and they want them to be recognised. But on the other hand great people do things silently and their action will speak for themselves and their worth is recognized and appreciated by others.

    4. * Punjabi Proverb 'Gulaab naal kande v hunde han'
    Meaning of Punjabi Proverb Gulaab naal kande v hunde han: 'Beneath the rose lies the thorn'.

    Explanation: Roses smells sweet and looks beautiful but beneath the rose lies the thorns. There is no rose without thorns. If we want the rose, we must be ready to bear the prick of the thorns. Similarly life is not so smooth and happy and there are many hurdles on the way for us to overcome. But if we want to achieve something we should be ready to face any risk and have to be bold to accept any kind of difficulties without which we could not achieve our aspirations in life.

    1. * 'Taye di dhi challi, mai kyu rha kalli'
    Meaning of Punjabi proverb 'taye di dhi challi, mai kyu rha kalli': The daughter of my uncle (father's elder brother) is going then why do I stay alone?

    Explanation: This proverb is used to state the mentally of a person who thinks that if other people are doing same work (either right or wrong) then why don't I do it. Generally, this proverb is used when a person is doing some wrong task imitating such similar task done by his close relative or friend.

    2. * Kehna dhi nu, sunaana nuh nu
    Meaning of Punjabi proverb ‘Kehna dhi nu, sunaana nuh nu’: Telling to daughter but taunting to daughter-in-law.

    Explanation: Some people have the nature to taunt others. This proverb is used when a person is telling something or scolding his own child or someone whom he/she loves, but actually his/her motive is to taunt some other person standing nearby. Such other person could be his/her daughter-in-law or any other person whom he/she dislikes. This person is used when the person who is taunting is not telling anything directly to the person to whom he/she is taunting rather he expresses his/her views indirectly.

    3. * Punjabi proverb: Naati dhoti reh gyi, of muh of makhkhi beh gyi.
    Meaning of Punjabi proverb ‘Naati dhoti reh gyi, of muh of makhkhi beh gyi.’: You remain stayed after a bath, and a housefly sat on your nose

    Explanation : When a person is very excited for any event and has made lot of preparations for that event, but the event itself gets cancelled, then this proverb is used.

    4. * Punjabi proverb: agga daudh, pichcha chaudh.
    Meaning of Punjabi proverb ‘agga daudh, pichcha chaudh.’: Running forth and losing what is left behind

    Explanation: This proverb is used to state the condition when a person is making preparation of forth coming steps but losing or forgetting what he had already done. Like a student is learning next lessons but forgetting the previous lessons already learnt.

    5. * Punjabi proverb: kuchchad kudi, shehar dhindora.
    Meaning of Punjabi proverb ‘kuchchad kudi, shehar dhindora.’: The girl is in lap, but the yell in whole town.

    Explanation: This proverb is used to state the condition when you are already having a particular thing with yourself but are seeking it everywhere asking everybody about it.

    6. * Punjabi proverb: Hijadayan de ghar munda jamiya, chum chum maar sutiya.
    Meaning of Punjabi proverb ‘Hijadayan de ghar munda jamiya, chum chum maar sutiya.’: A son is born in eunuch’s house and they died him with their kisses.

    Explanation: This proverb is used to state the condition when a person gets some precious thing but he gets so excited on getting that thing that he destroys it unconsciously before its usage.

    7. * Punjabi proverb: Dhid bharya, rabb darya.
    Meaning of Punjabi proverb ‘Dhid bharya, rabb darya.’: Stomach full, God get scared

    Explanation: This proverb is used to state that the condition when a hungry person gets something to eat. This proverb means that if the stomach of a person is full, then he can do anything, even he can scare God.

    8. * Punjabi proverb: Nvaa nau din, purana sau din.
    Meaning of Punjabi proverb ‘Nvaa nau din, purana sau din.’: New thing for nine days, old thing is for hundred days.

    Explanation: This proverb means that old is gold.

    9. * Punjabi proverb: Maa naalo dhi sayani, rijje pakke pave pani.
    Meaning of Punjabi proverb ‘Maa naalo dhi sayani, rijje pakke pave pani.’: Daughter is more intelligent than her mother. But she adds water in a ready to serve dish.

    Explanation: This proverb is used to taunt a person who tries to show him over smart than his elders. But actually he spoils the correct work of others unknowingly.

    10. * Punjabi proverb: Enna pakaya ke rajj ke trakaya.
    Meaning of Punjabi proverb ‘Enna pakaya ke rajj ke trakaya.’: Food is so much cooked than it is falling out.

    Explanation: This proverb is used to tell that excess of anything is wrong.

    11. Punjabi proverb: Mai na hundi te vya na hunda?
    Meaning of Punjabi proverb ‘Mai na hundi te vya na hunda?’: If I would no be there, then will not the marriage took place?

    Explanation: This proverb is used to clarify that if I would be absent from any event, still that event must have occurred. This proverb clarifies that the absence of a single person from any event does not dismiss that whole event.

    12. Punjabi proverb: Oh din dubba, jado ghodhi chadeya kubba
    Meaning of Punjabi proverb ‘Oh din dubba, jado ghodhi chadeya kubba’: The day was set down on which the humped person has sit on mare.

    Explanation: This proverb is used in such a situation when an incapable person is taking initiative to do some task and another person taunt him with this proverb.

    1. * Sarfa Karke Sutti, Te Aatta Kha Gayi Kutti
    Meaning of Punjabi proverb 'Sarfa Karke Sutti, Te Aatta Kha Gayi Kutti': A woman who saves flour before sleep, but the flour was eaten by female dog.

    Explaination: This proverb is used in a situation when a person takes too much care of something but it got wasted.

    2. * Aatta Gun ni hai hilni kyon hain
    Meaning of proverb 'Aatta Gun ni hai hilni kyon hain': Asking a woman Why you makes movement of your body when you prepare flour

    Explaination: This proverb means finding faults and mistakes in anybody's work.


    3. * Kutte Di Maut Marna
    English Meaning of proverb 'Kutte Di Maut Marna' - Dies the Death of a Dog

    Explaination: This proverb is used when anybody dies disgracefully or with no respect.

    4. * Nakk Te Makhi Na Bahn Deni
    English Meaning of proverb 'Nakk Te Makhi NA Bahn Deni' - Not even allowing the housefly to sit on the nose

    Explaination: This proverb is used when anybody thinks of himself/herself very much great

    5. * Akhi vekh ke Makhi nhi Nigli Jandi
    English Meaning of proverb 'Akhi vekh ke Makhi nhi Nigli Jandi' - After seeing housefly in food, we can't eat.

    Explaination: This proverb is used when somebody ask us to do a task and we knows that task will be harmful for us. In that situation we can ask that person that 'Akhi vekh ke Makhi nhi Nigli Jandi'.

    6. * Kutte Da Kutta Vairi
    English Meaning of proverb 'Kutte Da Kutta Vairi' - English meaning of this proverb is 'A dog is the enemy of a dog'

    Explaination: This proverb means their is always a fight or a dispute between people of similar business or work.

    1) Note tudayea te gya, munda viahyea te gya
    English Meaning- Change of notes and son after marriage move out of hands very fast.
    Explanation: This proverb is used to signify that big quantity paper money when changed for small one and newly wed son both get used up or move out of hands really fast.

    2)Hijdeyaan ghar munda jameyaan , chumm chumm maar suteyaa
    English Meaning- A baby born and in happiness killed with excess usage
    Explanation: This proverb is used when someones uses an object in excess due to its craze and destroys it really fast due to excess usage.

    3)Dudh da jalya lassi nu bhi phoonk poonk ke peenda ey
    English meaning- A burnt person dreads the fire.
    Explanation: This proverb is used when a person got loss from some place and after that he suspects everything and verifies to see that no harm to him is meant.

    4)Lohey de channe chabbana
    English meaning- A really harb job
    Explanation: This proverb is used to declare some work or job really difficult to perform.

    5)Andhyan vich kana raja
    English meaning- A figure among cyphers
    Explanation: Used for a man who is not good himself but is relatively better in comparison to others.

    6)Chor di dhaaDi vich tinka
    English meaning- Guilty person is always suspicious.
    Explanation: Used when a guilty mind or person gives away some hint himself about his guilt.

    7)Ooth de muh bich jeera
    English meaning- A drop in an ocean
    Explanation: Used when a small thing is given to a big person. Small and big can mean various things here.

    8)Dubde nu tinke da sahara
    English meaning- A drowning man finds straw
    Explanation: Used when a person in a problem finds an even smallest ray of hope for getting out of that trouble.

    9)Neem hakeem khatra jaan
    English Meaning- A bit knowledge is always too dangerous like a hakeem knows really less about curing and sometimes even spoils things.
    Explanation: Used to signify that little knowlege is not always beneficial and can be a danger also.

    10)Chaar dina di chandni phir andheri raat hai
    English substitute- A nine day wonder
    Explanation- for mostly a newly wed person to tell him that wedding feels great at start but eventually turns out to be a burden.

    11)Ek libdi majh saare talaa nu ganda ker dindi hai
    English meaning- A Rotten fish spoil the whole lot
    Explanation- To signify that even a single bad person can corrupt whole bag of good people.

    12)jehja raja ohji prajha-
    English meaning- Like king are its subjects
    Explanation- To signify that the way in which administrator will behave, in the same way person under will behave

    13)Jehji kerni oheji bharni
    English Meaning- As u sow, so u reap
    Explanation- To signify that that the results depends on the input you give.

    14)Gajde badal vasde nahi
    English substitute- Barking dog seldom bites.
    Explanation- Those who talk more mostly do nothing toward it in reality.

    15)Haati langh gaya pooch reh gayi
    English Meaning- elephant got through just his tail got stuck
    Explanation: To tell someone that whole or complicated part is don and only small or simple part is left.

    16) Jithon dee Khotti, Othay hee aaan khalotee.
    English meaning: Reached there from where it all started.
    Explanation: When someone comes back to the source position after moving here and there
