About Punjab State Profile Information

Punjab, the richest Indian state throbbing with its vibrant people and culture. The etymology of Punajab or the meaning of the name Punjab is Confluence of Five Rivers; and its fertile plain land has always been a temptation for invaders. Thus from the prehistoric times both the natural and the human resources have undergone several characteristic changes, through the Vedic, the Buddhist, the Gupta and more later ages. Persian and Greek invasions were followed by the Muslims after several centuries; the Shahi and Delhi Sultanates came and went; Sikhism preached its gospel to the world and also gave birth to a fighting race with a vibrant culture. Finally, following the independence of India and the ensuing Punjab, the present state came to have its shape.

Due to the large alluvial plains, Punjab was forever the Granary of India, and has also been conferred the National Productivity Award for its massive production from 1991-92 to 1998-99 and 2001 to 2003-04. And not only agriculture; Punjab is now witnessing rapid and coordinated industrialization in Small, Medium and Large scales. While National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER) has declared transportation in Punjab (rail, road and flight connectivity) as the country's best in 2007; Ludhiana has been honoured as the best business abode by the World Bank Study two years later. With the enhancement of the Amritsar International Airport (yet another would be in Mohali soon!)Punjab is now the easiest destination for tourists as well as business personnels. And there are lots of quality hotels in Punjab to receive and accommodate them too!

Punjab Government, Administration and Politics

Following the model of India itself, all the Indian States have a parliamentary system, known as the State Assembly, like the Punjab State Assembly. The Punjab State Government is headed by a ceremonial Governor of Punjab, whom the President of India appoints. The executive powers of the state is on the hands of the Chief Minister of Punjab, who is the head of the state legislature, Punjab Legislative Assembly. There are 117 election constituencies in Punjab and one representative is chosen by public election from each. The capital of Punjab is Chandigarh, which is actually administered as an Union Territory of India since it also serves as the capital of Haryana. The jurisdiction is managed by the Punjab High Court in Chandigarh. Punjab is divided into four administrative divisions and twenty administrative districts.
