Golden temple which is also known as Darbar Sahib or Harmandir Sahib is the most sacred religious spot for Sikhs. History of Golden Temple



Golden temple was attacked and destroyed numerous time by Afghan and other invaders. The courageous and tolerant Sikhs laid down their lives to free the temple from the invaders.

Guru Arjan Sahib was responsible for laying the foundation of Golden temple in December 1588. The foundation of this grand and elegant Sikh temple was laid by a muslim saint,Hazrat Mian Mir ji of Lahore.Guru Arjan Sahib was completely involved in the construction of Golden temple and supervised the total construction of this graceful temple. He also received great support from other eminent Sikh personalities like Baba Budha ji, Bhai Gurdas ji, Bhai Sahlo ji and many others.

In traditional Hindu temple architecture a structure is erected at the top but Golden temple is unique as it has a structure erected at its lower level. Similarly unlike hindu temples which have a single entrance and exit gate, Golden temple has four gates on various sides for entrance and exit of devotees.The best thing which Guru Arjan Sahib did was that he made the Golden temple accessible for all without any distinction on the basis of caste, creed, sex and religion.

Golden temple an elegant edifice of Sikh architectural brilliance has been erected on a 67ft. square platform in the centre of the Sarovar(tank). Golden temple has a total area of 40.5 sq. ft and has four doors in all four directions. Each door of Golden temple has a height of 10 ft and width of 8.5 ft.

Golden Temple is a true testimony of elegant architectural style of Sikhs. It is considered one of best architectural style all across the world. Golden temple has a unique place in rich history of Indian architecture.
