Amritsar is a Holy City in Punjab famous for the Golden Temple. There are many other places of interest nearby Amritsar which acn be visited.

Amritsar is a Holy City in Punjab famous for the Golden Temple. There are many other places of interest nearby Amritsar which acn be visited. Amritsar is an ancient city and one of the important seats of Sikh culture and history. There are many religious and historical spots in Amritsar.

Golden Temple


Amritsar is also known for the Holy Golden Temple or Swarn Mandir. It is one of the most famous monuments of Punjab and India. Golden Temple was founded by the Guru Ramdas the fourth Guru of Sikhs. It was completed by Guru Arjan Dev. Amritsar also means the holy pool of nectar. The work of Golden Temple began in 1573 by digging the holy pool. The construction of Harminder Sahib was completed in the year 1601. In the year 1604 Guru Granth Sahib got installed in Shri Harminder Sahib Ji. It was during the reign of Maharaja Ranjit Singh that the lower parts of the temple were decorated with marbles while the upper parts were inlaid with copper with gold plates. The new name Golden Temple hence is derived. There are fours gates of the Golden Temple and invite everyone irrespective of cast or relegion from all the directions.

Other Holy Shrines in and around Golden Temple.


There are other holy shrines like Har ki Paudi, Gurudwara Thara Sahib, Gurudwara Manji Sahib, Langar Hall, Nishan Sahib, Central Sikh Museum, Shaheed Bunga Baba Deep Singh. Langar is open 24x7 for people of all relegions and casts. There is no divide.

Jallianwala Bagh


In the outskirts of Amritsar there is the famous Jallianwala Bagh. This is a Marty'r memorial built in the memory of 1500 to 2000 people who fell under the bullets of General Dyer on April 13 1919. These people have gathered to attend a peaceful meeting during the freedom movement. You can still see the bullet marks on the walls of Jallianwala Bagh. Shaheedi Kuan or Marty's well is still there which reminds you of the freedom fighters who laid down there lives for the country.

Other Famous places of Amritsar


Durgiana Mandir: It is built on the lines of the design of Golden Temple. Durgiana Temple is located outside the Lohgarh gate. The temple attracts many tourists apart form Hindu Scholars and sages from across India.
Other famous places include Mata Mandir Rani Bagh, Ram Tirath, Ram Bagh Garden, Maharaja Ranjit Singh Panorama,Govindgarh Fort.

Wagha Border


While in Amritsar this place is a must see. Wagha, India Pakistan border is located just 30 Kms from Amritsar. Before the sun set there is retreat ceremony at Wagah Border which is a treat to watch

How to Reach Amritsar


Amritsar is very well conected with all the parts of India by road rail and Air. There is an International Airport in Amritsar. It is just 7 hours drive from Delhi. Number of trains are available from all the major cities of Punjab and India. Frequent buses ply between Delhi and Amritsar and from other cities like Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Ambala and Chandigarh.
From Amritsar Shared Taxis are available to Wagah Border in the evenings

Hi rajesh,

Great resource. You have described well about the tourist places of Amritsar. I have visited all these places except Wagha Border. I will try to visit it very soon.
