The Nanak Shahi Calendar, also spelt as the Nanakshahi Calender (Punjabi: ਨਾਨਕਸ਼ਾਹੀ), is the famous Punjabi Sikh Calendar which determines all the dates and events and Punjabi festivals of Sikhism. There are some salient features of the Nanakshahi calendar. These are -

  • The Nanak Shahi Calendar is a tropical and solar almanac.
  • The nomenclature Nanakshahi has been derived after Guru Nanak Dev Ji who was the founder of Sikhism and it begins from the year of the Guru's year of birth in 1469 CE. Thus, 2011 CE is Nanak Shahi 542.
  • It is very much like the Gregorian Calendar with exactly same year length of 365 days, having 7 months of 30 days each and 5 months of 31 days each.
  • The calendar is approved by Akal Takht, the highest Holy Seat of Sikhism, in 2003.
