Sarson da saag or mustard spinach is one of the trademark Punjabi recipes, most often accompanying makki di roti or corn breads. A bit rich and spicy, sarson da saag makes a perfect Saturday night dinner, or a Sunday lunch. Find out how to make sarson da saag in the Punjabi way from this sarson da saag recipe given below.

Ingredients required to make Sarson Da Saag


The ingredients required to prepare sarson da saag at home are -
  • 500g mustard greens (or spinach)
  • 2 pieces of fresh ginger
  • 2 hot green chillies
  • 2 cloves garlic (finely chopped)
  • 2 tea spoon salt
  • 2 table spoon cornmeal
  • 2 tablespoon ghee


Preparation process of sarson da saag


  1. Wash Spinach Leaves properly in clean water, trim the green leaves, and finally chop the green Spinach leaves. Thereafter put around 2 cups water into a large utensil with the salt and the greens. Cover and cook it for about 15 minutes until it leaves become tender. Remove then from heat.

  2. After removing from the Gas drain excess liquid into a pan. Mash the boiled greens carefully in the pot and stir in corn flour. Put the content in a pan to heat with half a cup of reserved liquid. Cook in slow flames for 10 minutes, stirring frequently. Keep it aside in a pot.

  3. Take one more pan and heat ghee and fry garlic, ginger, and chillies for about 5 minutes. Now mix the contents of pan into the pot of greens and mix well.




Now your sarson da saag is ready to serve hot!
