History of Politics of Punjab

Politics of Punjab has been dominated by two major parties, Indian National Congress (INC) and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). Prior to the division of Punjab in 1966, INC reigned supreme. On the question of a separate state on the basis of language, the present day state of Punjab was formed, dividing Haryana, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh as well as Chandigarh. From the 1970s the Akali Dal emerged in power and importance on the question of a Sikh state. The growth of Akali Dal and Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale led to the rise of militancy for a separate Sikh state, Khalistan. Bhindrawale died in Indian army's Operation Bluestar (1984). The state was under President's Rule throughout the 1970s and then again in 1986. Later, as Punjab settled into peace, INC won the 1992 general elections to gain power in the state. In 1997, Akali Dal MLAs of Punjab got the majority but lost it to the Congress MLAs of Punjab in 2002. In the 2007 election, the Akali Dal-BJP alliance won 67 seats, getting most of the MLAs of Punjab list while Congress was reduced to 44. Other seats were divided between independents and the Bahujan Samaj Party.
