Durgiana Mandir, Amritsar (Punjab)


Durgiana Mandir or Durgiana Temple is one of the famous temples of Amritsar (Punjab). It is located on the holy land where Golden Temple is also situated. Amritsar was founded by Guru Ram Dass Ji, fourth Guru of Sikhism. But the city is not bounded into a single religious significance rather it has assumed a special significance for Hinduism too. The city of Amritsar is related to multiple religions apart from Sikhism. For example, There is a myth that the sons of Lord Rama, Luv and Kush, had spent their early childhood along with their mother Sita on this land of Amritsar in the aashram of Maharishi Valmiki. History of Durgiana Mandir, Amritsar


Durgiana Mandir was founded by Lala Nathu Mal Rangwala and Guru Sahai Mal. However, the foundation of the temple was laid down by Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya. The sarovar (pond) of the temple was constructed by Shri Ram Nasen of Lahore in 1905. However, the bridge of the temple was constructed in 1921. This bridge is 250 feet long and 18.5 feet wide and it takes the devotees directly to the main shrine of the temple.

The popular Kaar Seva was organized in Durgiana temple Amritsar in December 1998 in which the people of various religions from far away areas had also participated. That Kaar Seva was organized to clean the pond of the temple. Presently, the temple is under the supervision of Durgiana Mandir Management Committee.

Durgiana Mandir is located in Amritsar outside the Lohgarh Gate near Golden Temple.

Structure of Durgiana Mandir


Durgiana Mandir The structure of Durgiana Mandir is very similar to the Golden Temple or Harmandir Sahib. Like the Golden Temple, it also has a golden dome and is situated in the middle of a pond (sarovar). It has silver doors, that's why also called as Silver Temple Amritsar by some people. The golden dome illuminates a lot in the glittering lights falling upon it especially in the evening.

Although Durgiana Mandir is mainly dedicated to Goddess Durga but it has temples of Lord Shiva, Lord Bhairon, Lord Hanuman, Sri Lakshmi-Narayana & Sri Sita-Ram in its complex. There is also a guest house near Durgiana Temple Amritsar named as Dharamshala Dhanwant Kaur and a famous canteen serving quality snacks and desi ghee sweets at reasonable rates. That is why accommodation near Durgiana Temple is not a big problem.

Religious Practices in Durgiana Temple Amritsar


It is believed that desire of son (मन्नत) from Durgiana Mandir never remains unfulfilled. If you also wish to be blessed by a baby boy (son) then you can also make a desire here. But the devotees who get their desire fulfilled dress up their son in the garment of a Langoor (or as Lord Hanuman) during the Navratas falling in the month of September - October.

By air: You can reach Amritsar by air via the international airport of Amritsar, Raja Sansi International Airport.

By rail: The railway station of Amritsar is just a few yards away from Durgiana Mandir.

By road: You can reach road also to Amritsar. Various taxis run from different cities towards Amritsar. The Bus stand of Amritsar is just 1.5 kms. away from Durgiana Mandir.
