The history of Nanakshahi calendar tells us that it was initiated by Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandak Committee since 1998 after replacing old Saka calendar. The credit to design it goes to Nanakshahi calendar designer Sardar Pal Singh Purewal. The main purpose or aim of Nanakshahi calendar is to determine the dates for various events and festivals of Sikhism. It is very famous saying that Sikhs can be found in any part of the world. Thus this calendar ensures and tells the Sikh Punjabi festivals dates to whole Sikh community. Some of them are Punjab gazetted holidays 2012 and Punjab government holidays 2012
